Anonymous asked: I work as make up artist at the Dungeon of Doom Haunted House in Zion IL. I would like to know how you did the Throat Effect make up?

Liquid latex and coarse paper toweling.

I covered her neck with latex and a layer of the toweling.  As it dried beneath, I pinched the “ridges” into the paper, then covered the paper with more latex.  While it was still wet, I placed a piece of ripped paper toweling on each side of her throat to work as the pulled away skin, latexed the edges on her throat and blended the entire piece to her skin.

Once the piece is set in place, I added a thin layer to both sides of the pulled away skin pieces for something to apply the makeup to.  This is done carefully though and very messily (to be honest) to keep the pieces from falling down and attaching to the rest of it.  However, if this happens, you can easily just pull it apart and it should still work well.

The ripped out vocalcords or tendons are made from attaching cotton balls to the top and bottom of the made opening with spirit gum or latex.  Once it’s dry, pull them away but leave enough lingering to coat in latex.  It’s ok if they touch or connect.  It’s still gory.

The rest is painting.  Reds, blacks, whites, pinks, etc.  Until it has the desired look you want with mild (or a lot) of bruising on the outside.  Then blood.  Lots of blood.  As our motto at Dent is “When in doubt, more blood.”

I hope this explains it well enough.  If you need better clarification or details about one step or another, feel free to message me again.

Happy Haunting!
